Instructor
Mrs. Onco, Teacher-Librarian
I. Overview
The Library Student Aide program at Irma Marsh Middle School provides experience and knowledge about how libraries function. You will perform valuable service to your school community while learning and practicing skills that will help you in future employment.
II. Goals
A student library aide’s main job is to help others. You will be providing assistance to library users (students, teachers, and library staff) with many different assignments and duties.
You are expected to be responsible, dependable, independent, organized and attentive to detail.
You are encouraged to take advantage and learn from all the many resources available to you in the library.
III. Learning Objectives
When you have completed this course, you should be able to:
Locate any book in the library using your knowledge of the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) system.
Understand how books are located in the library.
• Demonstrate appropriate behavior for a work setting.
IV. Instruction
You will achieve the learning objectives by working in the library with the guidance of Mrs. Onco and her assistant (yet to be hired). You will have the responsibility to care for an assigned section of library shelves and working at the circulation desk, assisting library users.
At the beginning of the school year, Mrs. Onco will teach you about the Dewey Decimal system and how books are shelved. You will learn all the basics about the Destiny circulation system and how to assist library users.
It is your responsibility to pay attention to the instruction offered by Mrs. Onco and to ask questions when you don’t understand, or when you need clarification. Please notify Mrs. Onco or the adult library assistant when you see something or someone in the library who needs attention. Service is our first goal in the library.
You may read or work on assignments for another class when all your library assignments are finished for the day. Video games, being on your phone (texting) and internet browsing are not permitted. You may, with permission, listen to music when shelving, but you must leave one earbud in order to be able to respond when needed.
V. Course Requirements
A. Attendance
You are required to be in the library and on time. Tardies and absences will affect your grade. If you have too many excused absences, you may see Mrs. Onco about performing duties before or after school. Unexcused absences may not be made up.
